"Phil was incredibly gentle and skilled in her use of the needles, I mention this in case this has ever put anyone off acupuncture, due to fear of needles. It isn't painful I promise. From a holistic point of view, I couldn't recommend it more. Do try it. Phil is a kind, skilled and experienced practitioner, I couldn't recommend her more highly."

Traditionally, acupuncture has been used to treat almost the entire spectrum of illness; physical and psychological, acute and chronic.

A Holistic Approach
Hereditary factors, lifestyle, diet, stress, exercise, environmental factors and how you feel all have an influence on your health. Part of the process of acupuncture is to explore with you the factors that contribute to your wellbeing, enabling you to play an active role in supporting your treatment with lasting results.

Your First Session (see Covid-19 for current modifications to initial appointment time)
Your first session will last about 1½ hours allowing plenty of time to get a really detailed picture of your issue, how it is affecting you, as well as time for treatment. For sports injuries, shoulder, neck and back pain a physical examination will be a major focus . For other conditions, including headaches, women's health and fertility, pulse and tongue examination may be more important, and together with detailed information about you and your health will lead to a diagnosis and treatment plan.

Follow-up Sessions
Subsequent sessions last 1 hour and, in addition to needling, may include some massage, cupping and the use of a heat lamp or moxa (a herb used to stimulate the points through warmth). Needles are left in place for about 20 minutes during which time most people experience a deep level of relaxation. Needling is gentle and uses extremely fine hair-like needles, which people typically describe as producing a slight momentary ache as the needle reaches the point.

Course of Treatment
One or two treatments may be enough but most people require a course of treatments usually beginning weekly for 4 or 5 sessions and then spacing out. Once the initial symptoms are better and have been consolidated, or progress has reached a plateau, treatment will move to its natural end point. Some people choose to continue their treatment at less regular intervals to maintain their well-being.

The British Acupuncture Council, as the leading professional body for acupuncture in the UK, provide further information. They lay down stringent standards for safe, hygienic practice. Only very fine, sterile, single use, disposable needles are used.
